My first history-related job was that of microfilmer for the Nebraska State Historical Society. Since then I have worked in both academic and public history settings, as well as taking a several-year-long sojourn in the oil business and occasionally busking. My research interests include transportation (railroads and navigation), beverage alcohol customs and regulation, writing and musical instrument material culture and horology. My personal interests include spending time with my family, plus making music, typewriter and clock repair, cycling (motorized and self-powered), railroad and marine modelling, travel and the odd excursion or two with my Airedale.
