Archives Month

CoSA celebrates American Archives Month graphic

Every October, the archival community comes together to celebrate American Archives Month, a nationwide effort to highlight the importance of archives, archivists, and the countless stories preserved in our collections. Throughout the month, organizations host events, share resources, and raise awareness about the essential role archives play in government, culture, and community life.

CoSA's Role in Archives Month

The Council of State Archivists (CoSA) is proud to support the Society of American Archivists (SAA) in promoting American Archives Month. We join SAA archival partners in showcasing the work of state and territorical archives, the professionals who manage them, and the innovations happening across the field.

Why Archives Month Matters

American Archives Month is an opportunity to:

  • Educate the public about the value of archival records and the importance of their long-term preservation.

  • Highlight the work of archivists, whose expertise ensures that essential records remain authentic, accessible, and secure.

  • Build awareness among policymakers and resource providers, strengthening support for ongoing archival initiatives.

  • Celebrate archival stories - unique, inspiring, and sometimes unexpected narratives that archives make possible.

How States Can Participate

Across the country, state and territorial archives recognize Archives Month through:

  • Public programs, tours, and open houses

  • Social media campaigns and storytelling initiatives

  • Downloadable posters, bookmarks, and public-facing materials

  • Governor proclamations and awareness campaigns

  • Virtual exhibits and educational webinars

CoSA regularly shares examples of member activities, resources, and promotional materials to help states coordinate and inspire one another.
