Recommended Format Specifications (Library of Congress)

Preservation appropriate file formats were identified by Library of Congress subject matter specialists and documented under six broad categories: 1) textual works and musical compositions, 2) still image works, 3) audio works, 4) moving image works, 5) software and electronic gaming and learning, and 6) datasets/databases. "Within each of these broad categories, there are further subdivisions, down to specific recommendations on various aspects of print books, digital photographs, motion picture films, and electronic datasets, for example."

This blog post discusses the original recommendations (2014).
