MAYDAY Spring Appeal Underway
May 11, 2021
In March we marked the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic. While much has changed because of it, we have high hopes that we will continue to rebound stronger and more resilient. This spring, many state archives are continuing to expand and reinvent their ability to provide access to collections. They are rethinking hybrid models of work. And they are continuing to protect the public and their workforces with social distancing and mask wearing.
However, this year’s MayDay Appeal reminds us that some things don’t change – severe and unpredictable weather events, aging infrastructures, and human errors continue to take their tolls on buildings, collections, and the preservation and service work our staffs do. As archivists, librarians, and curators, we know that preparedness is critical when disaster strikes. We have our emergency preparedness plans, we practice our drills, we take our training seriously. However, it’s hard to be completely prepared for disasters that are massive in scope. We rarely train for – let alone discuss – the emotional toll these events take on staff and volunteers.
When CoSA launched its Disaster Recovery Fund three years ago, its purpose was to provide modest support to state and territorial archives recovering from natural disasters. Over the years, CoSA has used these funds to help archives devastated by hurricanes and flooding. We couldn’t have done this without your support.
MayDay allows us time each year to consider what we can do to make a difference when (not if) an emergency occurs. In recognition of MayDay 2021, CoSA asks for your help to replenish and grow the Disaster Recovery Fund so that we have resources available to help when and where it is most needed.
Several years ago, your agency benefitted directly from CoSA’s emergency preparedness IPER training. This is your opportunity to pay that training forward by making a gift to the Disaster Recovery Fund. Please consider making a generous contribution online or with a check mailed to CoSA, PO Box 1583, Frankfort, KY 40602-1583.
Lend a hand of support this MayDay. You’ll be glad you did!
