    Summary of Work

    The Newspaper Archivist is responsible for the acquisition, preservation, arrangement, description, management, and access of the newspaper collections of the North Dakota State Archives, which includes newspapers in print, microfilm, and digital formats.

    Duties and Tasks

    • Acquire, describe, and manage archival collections containing newspapers.
    • Ingest born digital files into the agency's preservation system.
    • Digitize newspaper issues from print and microfilm formats.
    • Produce master negative microfilm and create service copies of microfilm rolls.
    • Assist with reference requests related to newspaper and periodical holdings and assist reference staff in locating information in collections for the public, government offices, and agency staff.
    • Provide technical expertise and collections care recommendations to organizations and the public.
    • Supervise interns and volunteers on projects relating to newspapers.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Requires a bachelor's degree in history, archival studies, library or information science, communications, electronics, media studies, or a closely related liberal arts or social science field, or four years of professional work experience in the management, preservation, and conservation of library or archival materials
    • Knowledge of library and/or archival standards and best practices, metadata standards, and collection management and/or integrated library systems
    • Familiarity with scanning procedures and related technologies

    Preference will be given to applicants that possess an advanced degree or certification in library and information sciences, archival studies, public history, or a closely related field and have experience capturing images on microfilm, processing, and care of microfilm collections.
