    ABOUT THIS POSITION

    The Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth is seeking candidates for the position of Processing Archivist in the Curatorial Department of the Massachusetts Archives. Acting on behalf of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, the Massachusetts Archives is responsible for securing, preserving, and managing for the public good those noncurrent records of state government deemed to have archival (permanent) value. The Processing Archivist will work collaboratively with the Accessions Archivist and Senior Processing Archivist in all aspects of archival accessions, processing, and description. The Processing Archivist also serves as coordinator for the State Agency records center and participates in COSTEP MA (Coordinated Statewide Emergency Preparedness in Massachusetts), a statewide disaster preparedness network. This is a full-time position and includes state benefits. 

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Organize and rehouse collections
    • Identify sensitive materials that may require redaction
    • Research the historical context of collections
    • Produce catalog records and finding aids using MARC format and a commercial Archival Collection Management System
    • Work with special formats including photographs, moving images, and born-digital records
    • Assist with acquisition and analysis of new accessions
    • Supervise retrieval, pick up, and return for materials held in the State Agency records center on a weekly basis
    • Represent the Archives on COSTEP MA by participating in monthly meetings

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

    • Ability to work independently and as a team member, with strong attention to detail
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated knowledge of archives practice and familiarity with accepted conservation and preservation methods
    • Ability to lift and carry a 40 pound box

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master's degree in library/information science or history
    • one to two years' experience as a processing archivist

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Familiarity with Archival Collection Management Systems such as Re:Discovery Proficio and Zasio
    • Basic knowledge of Massachusetts history
    • Experience processing large collections
    • Experience working with legislative records

     

    Salary: $46,000 yearly + benefits

    Hours: Full-time
