    Description
    The Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives is seeking a Division Director to serve as the State Archivist for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

    This position will continue the tradition of strong leadership within the local, state, and national archival and history community. The Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives cares for a comprehensive collection of records, conducts related programs and services to state agencies, local governments, historical records repositories, community organizations, and individuals. These programs and services span the boundaries of the Commonwealth and include technical assistance, training, publications, and grants to address archives and records management.

    This position will also direct Kentucky's state and local government records management programs which includes four branches (Archives, Local Records, State Records, and Electronic Records) including the State Records Center.

    The State Archivist will additionally lead the agency in the fulfillment of its mission to preserve the record of local and state governments for public scrutiny, to secure and make accessible historically significant records and other valuable resources, build relationships with the local records commissions, state records agents, and will provide guidance for archival services and records management programs statewide. The position will also serve on various advisory groups, government officials, and cultural heritage groups and organizations.

    Specific duties include:
    •    Provide oversight and direction to all areas of the division including direct supervision of branch managers.
    •    Meets regularly with staff.
    •    Plans and implements projects and programs.
    •    Research and explore new trends and developments in archives and records management.
    •    Provide statewide leadership in the area of archival services and records management.
    •    Develop partnerships that enhance archives and records management programs.
    •    Work with legislators and state and local officials regarding public records management issues.
    •    Refine processes related to archives and records
    •    Provide guidance for process improvement in the division.
    •    Participate in strategic planning and budget processes.
    •    Promote resource sharing through information technology and provide expertise on technology and automated systems.
    •    Participate in and represent the agency in local and national professional archival or records management associations.
    •    Advise and support the State Librarian regarding archival services and records management.


    Preferred qualifications include:
    •    Master's degree or above in archives, records management, history, or library and information science.
    •    Seven or more years of professional work experience in a formally established archives program.
    •    Ten years of post-master's experience working in a formally established archives program in progressively responsible positions with seven or more years of supervisory experience in a special collection, library, or formally established archives program.
    •    A minimum of five years managing budgets and grants.
    •    Experienced in public speaking, written communication, and archival displays.
    •    Strong technological skills and adept at navigating specialized software. Writing skills and oral communication experience.
    •    Preference is to those who have work experience in a state library administrative agency.
