Working with Indigenous Communities

When:  Sep 23, 2021 from 03:00 PM to 04:00 PM (ET)

Join Wisconsin Historical Society colleagues Rebecca H. Comfort (Keweenaw Bay Ojibwe), American Indian Nations Liaison, and Angela Fritz, Collections Division Administrator and State Archivist, in conversation as they center American Indians in the present-day landscape of tribal libraries, archives, and museums and their relevance to state archives. Highlighting sources that include structural barriers and underlying ideas commonly found in traditional institutional settings, Fritz and Comfort will begin to untangle the complex effects of these commonplace issues, re-thinking their impact in a strategic conversation focused on forging new paths forward to better serve American Indian constituents and Indigenous institutions.

At the Alabama Department of History and Archives, Kellie Bower, an archeologist and Jaimie Kicklighter from the archival staff will share their work regarding the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and offer valuable perspective on working with Native American tribes and some of the challenges in digitization and access.
