Records Managers’ crucial role in the litigation hold process is to help their office mitigate the risk of spoliation or sanctions during the course of litigation. It is a task that requires timeliness in issuing a hold, collaboration with IT and legal counsel, and ongoing support of an organization’s records management policies and procedures. This presentation will provide an overview of information governance and e-discovery concepts, how records management contributes to the legal hold process, and what tools are available to manage holds effectively. One example that will be discussed is the Ohio Attorney General’s Office (OAG)’s use of SharePoint to replace manual hold processes with automation while reducing the workload and demonstrating defensibility in litigation hold practices.
