File Renaming

Working with digital files there may come a time when you need to rename files.  For example, digital images may come to you with the file name "DSC0001"; you may want to rename them with something more descriptive. Or you may want to add a date to the end or beginning of the file name.

The following tools assist with renaming files:

  • Bulk Rename Utility: This Windows based program allows for bulk renaming of files including appending, prepending, or changing the file names. A variety of settings allows users to choose how the renaming will take place.  The University of Minnesota Libraries has written a resource guide for this tool.
  • Den4b Renamer: This Windows based program allows for bulk renaming of files including appending, prepending or changing file names. A variety of settings can be used to edit the file name. The Minnesota State Archives has written a resource guide for this tool.
  • Name Changer: This Apple based program allows for bulk renaming of files including appending, prepending or changing file names. A variety of settings can be used to edit the file name. The University of Minnesota Libraries has written a resource guide for this tool.
