Under the general direction of the Archives Services Manager, the Reference Services Manager is responsible for the operations of the State Archives' Research Room and Reception Desk. The incumbent provides oversight of the public disclosure of historical records; oversees PRA requests, works in conjunction with the legal office on complex and restricted records requests under the Information Practices Act (IPA) and Public Records Act (PRA), and coordinates other special projects as requested.
As the Reference Services Manager, you will also be responsible for:
- Supervising, directing, mentoring, coaching, and evaluating the performance of staff
- Ensuring staff accurately complete customer research requests and duplication/copy orders in a timely manner
- Preparing and reviewing unit reports and statistics
- Advises and assists researchers in the use of archival materials in research activities
- Provides consultation on Archives policies and procedures.
- Makes presentations to external constituencies and management
Desirable Qualifications:
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- Experience streamlining processes in a lead or supervisory capacity in an archive or library.
- Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships and foster a positive and productive work environment.
- Knowledge of collections management systems, content management systems; knowledge of library/archives tools, applications, and software.
- Demonstrated ability to excel in a challenging, complex, and often time-sensitive environment, and manage multiple priorities.
- Experience with partnership development, budgets, and vendor management
- Experience utilizing state and federal laws to guide policies and/or procedures.
- Experience directing research projects, project management, working with PRAs, restricted records, and/or public disclosure of information.
- Knowledge of the California State Archives, state government history, the state legislative process, genealogy and California State history.
