    Description
    The Education and Labor Cabinet's mission is to educate, prepare, train, and ensure the safety of Kentucky's current and future workforces.     It is the mission of the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives to provide information access for the citizens, businesses, and agencies of the Commonwealth. To help the state maintain its competitive edge, the department offers comprehensive services which assure that our clientele has access to information resources: virtual, physical, and human. As one of 10 state agencies in the country to combine library, archival, and public records programs, the department is uniquely positioned to meet these needs.

    We are seeking a charismatic and customer service-oriented individual to join our team as an Archivist II. A passion for libraries, information literacy and a dedication to quality customer service is highly preferred.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 
    •    The position plans and prepares procedures for the maintenance of archival records and materials.
    •    Plans, organizes, supervises, and reviews the work of professional, administrative, clerical, and temporary personnel.
    •    Provides guidance to staff in work activities and professional development and evaluates employee performance.
    •    Researches permanent records and archival material in response to walk-in patrons, phone, mail, and email requests for information.; assists patrons in using resources of the State Archives.
    •    Accesses, appraises, arranges, describes, and preserves historical public records and makes these records available for research.
    •    Appraises records to be microfilmed and prepares identification targets for each record series to be filmed.
    •    Transfers records from state and local government agencies to the State Archives; retrieves and refiles original records as requested by agencies and for onsite customers.
    •    Processes collections of historic records from state and local government agencies; compiles inventories of archival holdings; creates indexes; and uses professional preservation techniques to conserve and protect records in archival collections.
    •    Develops procedures for storage and retrieval of archival records and materials; participates in planning and organizing various work projects.
    •    Participates in specialist archival projects and outreach as needed.
    •    Performs other duties as required. This position will have access to confidential and sensitive information. The successful candidate will be required to ensure the safeguarding and security of all confidential and sensitive information and will be required to complete trainings, sign acknowledgements, follow all policies and adhere to all statutes and requirements pertaining to the safeguarding and security of confidential and sensitive information while employed and after employment ends.

    Minimum Requirements
    EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in history, library science, public administration, social science or a related field.

    EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Four years of professional archival experience in one or more of the following areas: reference, appraisal, description, preservation, or the arrangement of documents.

    Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in archival studies, records management, history, library science, public administration, or related field will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis not to exceed two years.

    Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Professional archival experience in one of the above areas will substitute for the education on a year-for- year basis.

    Working Conditions
    Work is typically performed in a library setting. May be exposed to dust particles or other substances typically found in library settings which may require the following of safety procedures.


    Probationary Period
    This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
