SERI - State Electronic Records Initiative

In July 2011, the Council of State Archivists launched an initiative focused on improving efforts to manage, preserve, and provide access to state government electronic records nationwide.

During Phase 1, we are developing state profiles that will report on current status, including strategies used to create, fund, and maintain state electronic records programs. We are also gathering information on partnerships and other keys to successful programs as well as barriers that have prevented implementation. We also hope to determine that the states can collaborate, including collective action through CoSA. We expect the analysis to identify priorities for one or more grant proposals.

Funding for Phase 1 comes from LSTA funds awarded by the Indiana State Library and the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.

What we're learning

During August and September 2011, CoSA is conducting telephone interviews with each of the archives directors, records managers, and staff who work with electronic records in each state and territory. Phillip C. Bantin, Indiana University, is leading the interviews and will prepare a comprehensive report at the conclusion of this process.

In the meantime, we will start sharing specific information about state electronic records programs here:
