FY2004 Survey of State Archives and Records Management Programs

FY2004 Survey Data

Tables of data from the FY2004 survey of State Archives and Record Management Programs have been compiled in Excel and are now available for download.

A survey to collect selected FY2006 data was completed in October 2006.

"The State of State Records" report provides an analysis of the results of both surveys and includes extensive tables of data from each.

Background

The Council of State Archivists received a two-year grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, a major component of which was an in-depth survey to collect FY2004 program data from state archives and records programs and the State Historical Records Advisory Boards (SHRABs).

This survey was the first step in a broader program development initiative intended to measure the health of our nation's historical records, starting with the state archives and records management programs. This initiative calls for regular assessments of state archival programs in order to measure progress and effectiveness. It will use this data to articulate a national strategic direction to ensure preservation of and access to our nation's historical records.

The development of the initiative and related surveys, 2004-2006, have been supported by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The project's Survey Management Team led the effort.

FY2004 Survey Data Collection Process

Each State Archivist and State Records Manager was mailed a paper copy of the survey, instructions, and a unique password for online data entry on Thursday, December 2, 2004. States were originally asked to respond by Friday, January 7, but the deadline was later extended to March 4, 2005.

Each state was provided with the following items which may be downloaded as PDF for reference:
