COSHRC News – June 2003 This is the first in a series of short e-newsletters designed to update you on recent activities and help you prepare for the annual meeting. Please feel free to pass it along to staff or SHRAB members who might also have an interest in COSHRC's work. 2003 Annual Meeting Coming Soon! It looks like we’ll have another good turnout at the COSHRC annual meeting July 11-12 in Providence. More than 40 states have indicated that they will be sending representatives this year. By now you should have reserved your hotel room. Remember, COSHRC cannot reimburse you for more than the standard conference rate and the deadline making those reservations is Tuesday, June 17. We’ll need a final head count for Friday evening’s COSHRC dinner by June 27. Watch http://www.coshrc.org/ for updated information about the meeting. You can also download reimbursement forms, the COSHRC program, and link to the NAGARA program from this page. Elections. On May 27, the COSHRC Board elected Kathleen Roe (NY) as Vice President and David Carmicheal (GA) as Treasurer. At the 2003 annual meeting in Providence, the COSHRC membership will elect three new members of the COSHRC Board of Directors, increasing the size of the Board by one to a total of seven members. The slate of candidates will be announced shortly. Grant Proposal for 2003-2005 COSHRC Operations. COSHRC Board Member Kathleen Roe (NY) led the effort to prepare a grant proposal to NHPRC that was submitted against the June 1 deadline. The focus of the proposal is on strengthening the capacity of state archival programs and SHRABs to carry out an effective, nationwide records program. If funded, this grant will support a comprehensive survey of state archives and records programs and SHRABs and would also cover expenses for the COSHRC annual meetings in 2004 and 2005 and the midyear meetings of the Board of Directors to be held in conjunction with the NAGARA and SAA governing boards. A decision about the grant will be made at NHPRC's November 2003 meeting. The proposed survey would update and expand on earlier surveys of state archives and records programs conducted by COSHRC, the results of which were published in 1993 and 1996. The 1996 report is available at http://www.coshrc.org/reports/1996rpt/1996survey.htm. COSHRC Joins the National Coalition for History (NCH). The COSHRC Board voted in May to join NCH at the “sustaining” level with a contribution of $3,000 per year. This provides our organization with a full seat on the NCH Policy Board. Tim Slavin, COSHRC president, will represent COSHRC on the Policy Board. Additional information about NCH and its initiatives is available at http://www2.h-net.msu.edu/~nch/ New England SHRABs Plan Second Annual Retreat. Twenty individuals representing the State Historical Records Advisory Boards in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont will convene September 18-19 at a conference center in Marlboro, Massachusetts. You can read about the results of last year’s retreat in an article by Bill Milhomme (MA) published in NHPRC’s Annotations (December 2002). The State Coordinators and/or Deputies from all six New England states will be at the Providence meeting, so take the opportunity to talk to them and consider how a regional SHRAB meeting might work in your area of the country. ======================================================================== |
