Archival organizations across the nation are coming together to celebrate American Archives Month.
The Council of State Archivists (CoSA) is working actively with the Society of American Archivists to develop a coordinated nationwide annual observance of Archives Month. We are pleased to support this efforts by providing access to a variety of resources through our website. We believe that American Archives Month provides an excellent opportunity for educating the public and resource providers about the work that archivists do and why it is important.
Many local celebrations will still choose to focus their activities within an "Archives Week," but it is hoped that, over time, we will be able to develop greater nationwide coordination among the organizations regarding themes, promotional materials, and event planning.
Until now, while most Archives Week activities occured in October, there was no fixed, nationally recognized date for the events. Instead, each association or state selected its own dates, often timing them to coincide with other events of local significance such as statehood days.
In 2005, some celebrations began in late September while others did not occur until mid-November. Over the past several years, a number of regions and states began to designate the entire month of October as Archives Month, including the Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists and the states of Arizona, Colorado, North Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. October is also designated as Family History Month in the State of Michigan. The number of archival associations and repositories sponsoring Archives Week or Month activities each fall continues to grow.

Archivists across the United States offer a wide variety of events -- information fairs, exhibits, lectures, open houses, tours, and more -- to reach out to the public and raise awareness about the important work done by archives and archivists everywhere.
