CoSA Strategic Plan

GOAL 1: Ensure an ongoing viable organization for state archivists

Highest priorities:

Secure funding for ongoing CoSA operations

Develop marketing plan

Enhance and expand organizational relationships

Other priorities:

Continue to hold CoSA annual meetings

Maintain effective administrative services

Sustain listserv for state archivists

Involve more CoSA members in the work of the organization and offer development opportunities for the next generation of leaders

Continue offering orientation to new state archivists

Establish an archival repository for CoSA’s organizational records


GOAL 2: Secure records funding for all states and territories

Highest priorities:

Work for funding of the Partnership for the American Historical Record (PAHR)

Develop case statement on the value of records: “Why do records matter?”

Develop advocacy toolkits for use by CoSA as an organization and its individual members which include effective materials for informing and engaging potential funders.

Other priorities:

Work for restoration of funding for NHPRC in FY2008 and reauthorization in FY2009

Seek new sources of revenue and financial support

• federal agencies other than NHPRC (e.g., IMLS, NEH)

• private foundations

• vendors and other potential sponsors


GOAL 3: Provide services to state archivists to assist in managing their programs

Highest priorities:

Build on/follow up on Emergency Preparedness Initiative

Build on/follow up on Local Government Archives Project

High priority, periodic:

Collect and disseminate data on archives and records in state and local governments and historical records repositories

Other priorities:

Provide mechanisms for developing consensus and offering guidance on issues and challenges facing state archivists (e.g., contracts with online content providers, recovery of alienated public records)

Collect basic data on state archives and records management program every two years and establish standards/metrics for this effort

Maintain and update State Coordinators Manual in cooperation with NHPRC

Maintain and update SHRAB Members Manual and orientation program in cooperation with NHPRC

Manage and maintain CoSA web site and serve as an information clearinghouse

Promote the observance of American Archives Month in the states and territories
